A newborn is considered so for 6 weeks. In general, newborns curl up better and can do more poses when they are under 14 days old. However, sometimes, it is not possible to get the baby to the studio by then. Older babies are still welcome. I have had babies as old as 6 weeks do almost every pose in the book. And I have had 6 day old babies fight me every step of the way. Every baby is different. But, as babies approach the 3 week mark, their bones begin to harden and curling up is not as comfortable for some babies.
No. 3 weeks is not too old for newborn photos. For most babies, they start to lose their ability to curl around 14 days. But every baby is different. Some babies can still do most poses at 3 weeks. But even if they can't, there are still a lot of cute options for infant phots at 3 weeks old.
If your baby is older than 6 weeks, images are still possible, of course. Most likely, they will all be wrapped poses. I never turn a baby away because of age. We just have to adjust.
Don't forget, that you can always do 3 month, 6 month, 9 months and first year portraits. As long as your first photos are before 6 weeks, you will have an awesome set of memories of the newborn stage.
Newborn photos with parents hold immense significance, commemorating the bond between baby and parents. These images capture fleeting moments of tenderness, love, and connection, preserving them for generations to come. In the whirlwind of early parenthood, these photographs serve as cherished reminders of the profound joy and transformative journey of welcoming a newborn into the family. They freeze time, encapsulating the purity of innocence and the depth of parental devotion. Beyond mere snapshots, they become tangible expressions of love, weaving a visual narrative of a family's unique story. Investing in newborn photos with parents ensures that these precious moments are forever etched in memory, evoking warmth and nostalgia for years to come. You can use my client closet to find dresses and gowns for mom to wear. Dads can coordinate with basic long sleeved shirts and slacks you already own.
There are a few different ways you can photograph your infant. One way is to use studio lighting. Another way is to use natural light. You can do both ways in a studio or in your home. Studio lighting offers a lot of flexibility. For one, you do not need to keep changing the settings on your camera as the light is consistent each time. You do not need to worry about weird color casts either. Natural light can work too and is what most people have access to. You probably will need to modify natural light quite a bit in order to get the look you want; especially for a newborn baby.
Posing is the next challenge. If you are not a professional photographer, I recommend doing very candid type lifestyle images with your baby. If you do not know what you are doing, trying to pose a baby into popular poses without the proper equipment and safety training could cause injury.
Katie is a studio photographer and is has photographed over 200 newborn babies.
New born baby photos take place early in the morning. Clients arrive at my studio around 8:30 am. Immediately, we feed the baby. Hopefully, this will encourage a deep, comfortable sleep. Remember, when your baby is in a studio for infant portraits, they do not behave the same. So we use several strategoes to help keep your baby calm. I usually start with the baby wrapped. For these first images, I may use newborn wooden bowl prop, or a newborn bed prop. After about 40 minutes, most babies fall into a deep sleep. From here, I can do more difficult poses. Photos of newborns can take time, so it is best if you do not have to rush off the day of your newborn photoshoot. Family photos with a newborn are taken either first thing, or last. Depending on if there are newborn photos with siblings too.
“Did my maternity photos at Panos Productions Photography with Katie and I was extremely pleased. Being the procrastinator that I tend to be I was grateful Katie had an opening to squeeze me in as soon as she did. The images were great! We were so happy with our maternity photos we returned and had our babies first newborn pictures done.”

I loved the photos, we highly recommend katie..”
“I found Panos Productions and Photography on Yelp and they were close to where I lived. I loved the pictures of Katie's work online. I contacted Katie to do my newborns first photos for me. Katie was very professional and explained everything regarding the upcoming photo shoot over the phone so I new what to expect when I arrived. Katie was excellent with my little one and was so good at calming him down. Usually newborn photos are done within the first 10 days of them being born. My little one was just over a month because he was in the hospital longer then expected. We were so worried he would not be still for his photos and would wake up and cry most of the time. Katie was the baby whisper. ”
“What a great experience! Katie was very professional. She took such great care with my baby as she posed him in various positions. The pictures came out great. I keep getting so many compliments from my family and friends that have seen the pictures. I highly recommend Panos Productions Photography to anyone that wants adorable, professional pictures of their baby. A+”
