Try to focus on 2 elements of your photography. For example, the last time I went to WPPI, I only went to workshops on Maternity portraits and Marketing. This way, when I came home, I had a notebook full ofattainable new techniques to try. If you take classes that are all over the place, it can be so scattered that it is hard to apply what you invested money to learn. Second, find the Facebook and IG accounts of the conference you are going to months ahead. Doing this will tell you about new things and events added. Most conferences kind of build up. Not all experiences are listed all at once.

Models are also on these Facebook Groups and are looking to connect in advance.

If you can, arrive a day early. This will give you time to scout out locations in and around the conference area.  Once things start, it gets crazy, but the calm before the storm is a great time for you to set up a shoot for your portfolio. That model you met on Facebook may be able to meet you the day before too.

Make the effort to bring gear. These days, many lights like Godox are small yet powerful. One of these and a speed light or two can help. You will be able to find someone to hold your light there. It's worth it to have a bit of your own gear with you.

Almost all presenters are very generous and willing to help. If you email them very soon after their talk, you can often get their PowerPoint presentation or something similar. Futher, ask if they are willing to share other resources such as email templates, pricing guides, and more. In 10 years, I do not think any presenter has ever said, "no" to my requests for such things.  But be courteous and ask very soon after the talk. Don't hound them weeks after the conference.

At most conferences, there is an entire world of "non sanctioned" activities. Things like workshops, live shoots, cool location experiences and more. These are usually organized by photographers who live locally. To find these things, there proably  is  a Facebook Group dedicated to it. You can even email the conference themselves and they may be able to turn you on to the non-official Facebook Page.

These events can be  exceptional because the photographers are in their native habitat and know exactly where to go for the best shots. At the same time, be sure to do your research and be sure they are legitimate. If you register, there is likely no refund or any way for you to get your money back if it is a scam. I have participated in several such "unofficial" events and have never had a problem. If an event is taking place in an isloated area of the Los Vegas Desert, definitely drive yourself there, and have a pal with you.  Be smart, obviously.
