When To Take Newborn Pictures

The best time is as soon as mom and baby are well enough and comfortable. In general, under 14 days old is best in terms of studio newborn photos. Babies still curl easily and can be posed comfortably. After 14 days, the cartiladge in their bodies slowly begins to harden. This is a sustained process that begins in earnest around 3 months. But in terms of posing for infant photos, some babies begin to have a harder time doing certain poses around two weeks. Any experienced newborn photographer will tell you that they have had babies as old as 6-8 weeks still pose easily, and babies under two weeks who were not happy in some poses. But as a rule, under 14 days is the newborn photography industry's answer to the question, "When should I do newborn photos?  Of course, photos of your baby are possible at any time. But the kind and variety of images will differ.

The first thing you need to consider is the well being of mom and the baby. Every woman has a different birthing experience, and this needs to be taken into consideration. It may be that the baby is doing well at day 8, but mom still needs time to recover. At most studio newborn photo sessions, mom will have to sit for about 3 hours. She may also need to sit on a stool, or stand while holding the baby for images. This can be a very painful time for new moms and must be considered. Newborn photos are almost exclusively done in the mornings. This is because early to mid morning starts are easier on baby. Most newborns are not at their best in the afternoon (in terms of taking photos)

When To Schedule Newborn Photos

The first few weeks of a baby's life are a whirlwind of emotions and adjustments for both parents and newborns alike. During this period, babies undergo rapid growth and development, transitioning from curled-up bundles of joy to more alert and responsive individuals. It's precisely this fleeting stage that makes newborn photography so captivating.

Most newborn photo studios have clients pay in advance for their session. Once your baby is born, you tell the studio ASAP. At this time, an exact date is chosen. Photographers work this way because, in natural births, we never know when baby will decide to arrive. And if a C Section is needed, mom and baby may need longer time to recover. Studios will schedule your newborn photo shoot on a day that is safe and comfortable for both of you. If that is past the 14 day mark, do not worry. This happens all the time. Your newborn photographer will understand and know what to do.

The health and well-being of both the baby and the parents should always take precedence when scheduling a newborn photoshoot. If the baby or the mother has experienced any complications during childbirth or requires additional medical attention, it may be necessary to postpone the photoshoot until everyone is ready and healthy. Similarly, parents should prioritize their own well-being and avoid scheduling a photoshoot during a time of high stress or exhaustion.

While it may be tempting to schedule a photoshoot during the first few days after birth, it's essential to consider the unique needs of both the baby and the parents. Newborns are still adjusting to life outside the womb, and they require ample time for feeding, sleeping, and cuddling. Therefore, finding the optimal time for a photoshoot involves striking a balance between capturing those precious early moments and ensuring the baby's comfort and well-being.

Why Photographers Love Newborns Under 14 Days Old

Most professional newborn photographers recommend scheduling a photoshoot within the first two weeks of the baby's life. During this time, newborns are typically sleepier, more curled up, and easier to pose, making it easier to capture those adorable, womb-like images. Additionally, newborn skin tends to be smoother and less prone to baby acne or skin irritations during the initial weeks, allowing for more flawless photographs.

Editing is a major part of newborn photography. It takes a lot of time, and can be tedious. Babies over two weeks old often start to have baby acne and/or very flaky skin. While these imperfections can be mitigated in Photoshop, it is labor intensive. So, of course, photographers love it if you can come BEFORE those skin issues happen. But no professional newborn photographer will advise coming early if it is not safe and comfortable for both baby and mom.

Babies under 2 weeks also tend to sleep more deeply and are less aware of their surroundings. This makes the entire session easier overall.

Flexibility is Key

While the first two weeks offer an ideal window for newborn photography, every baby is unique, and their schedules may not always align with our plans. Some babies may arrive earlier or later than expected, while others may require additional time to adjust to their new environment. As such, flexibility is crucial when scheduling a newborn photoshoot. It's essential to work with a photographer who understands the unpredictable nature of newborns and is willing to accommodate any changes in timing.

 Capturing Your Baby's Milestones

While the first two weeks offer an ideal window for capturing those classic newborn images, it's essential to remember that every stage of a baby's life is filled with unique moments worth preserving. As the baby grows and develops, they will reach various milestones, from lifting their head for the first time to smiling and giggling. Documenting these milestones through photography allows you to create a comprehensive visual narrative of your baby's journey from infancy to childhood. Of course, everyone wants newborn photos as early as possible. But if your baby misses the newborn stage, there are still many gorgeous milestone's to capture.

In the digital age, photographs serve as a powerful tool for preserving memories and sharing moments with loved ones near and far. While smartphones make it easier than ever to snap photos on the go, investing in professional newborn photography offers a level of quality and artistry that cannot be replicated.

Professional photographers have the expertise, equipment, and artistic vision to capture your baby's unique personality and charm, creating timeless images that you'll cherish for a lifetime.

Professional newborn photographers spend a fortune learning how to pose newborns for photos, how to swaddle for newborn photos and how to take infant pictures. (Interested in DIY newborn photos? Read:  learning how to take newborn photos at home)

Deciding when to take newborn pictures involves careful consideration of both the baby's needs and the parents' preferences. While the first two weeks offer an ideal window for capturing those classic newborn images, flexibility and understanding are key when scheduling a photoshoot. By prioritizing the health and well-being of both the baby and the parents and working with a skilled professional photographer, you can create lasting memories that will be treasured for generations to come. So, seize the moment, and let the magic of newborn photography preserve those precious early days forever.
