How Long Does a Newborn Photography Session Take in Burbank?

Wondering how long newborn photos take? If you're searching for a newborn photographer in Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena, or the San Fernando Valley, this is one of the most common questions new parents ask.

The simple answer is thatmost professional newborn photography sessions last between 2½ and 4 hours.

That surprises many first-time parents. After all, newborns are tiny! Why would photographing them take so long?

The answer is simple: we work on the baby's schedule, not ours.

At Panos Productions Photography, every newborn session is completely baby-led. Feeding, comforting, diaper changes, and soothing are all part of creating beautiful, safe newborn portraits.

Why Newborn Photography Takes Longer Than Other Portrait Sessions

Unlike family portraits or headshots, newborn photography cannot be rushed.

During your baby's first two weeks, every newborn is different.

Some babies:

  • Sleep soundly for two hours.

  • Wake only once to eat.

  • Settle easily after feeding.

Other babies:

  • Cluster feed frequently.

  • Need extra comforting.

  • Have tummy discomfort after eating.

  • Prefer being held.

  • Wake often between poses.

Every one of those babies is completely normal.

Because newborn photography is baby-led, I allow plenty of time so no one feels hurried.

How a Newborn Session Works in My Burbank Area Studio

Families visiting my private Glendale-area studio are often surprised that we don't immediately begin taking pictures.

Instead, we begin by making sure your baby is comfortable.

Step One: Feeding

We schedule sessions close to your baby's normal feeding time.

Most families spend the first 20–30 minutes simply feeding their baby.

A full tummy usually helps babies feel relaxed and sleepy, creating the best opportunity for peaceful newborn portraits.

Step Two: Reading Your Baby's Cues

This is where experience matters.

As both a Certified Professional Photographer and someone trained in newborn care and safety, I spend a few minutes simply observing your baby.

For example, some babies still have trapped gas after feeding.

Wrapping or posing them immediately would make them uncomfortable.

Instead, I may suggest:

  • Burping again

  • Gentle bicycle-leg movements to relieve gas

  • Extra cuddles

  • A few more minutes of settling

These small moments often make a huge difference later in the session.

Every Baby Has Their Own Timeline

Once your baby is calm and comfortable, we begin photographing.

Most sessions follow a gentle flow.

Typically we begin with:

  • Wrapped portraits

  • Simple beanbag poses

  • Individual prop setups

  • Parent and sibling portraits (if included)

  • Detail photographs of tiny fingers, toes, eyelashes, and lips

Starting with wrapping helps many newborns feel secure because it mimics the comfort of being in the womb.

As babies settle more deeply into sleep, we gradually move into additional poses.

Why Some Sessions Take Three Hours

Parents sometimes worry when a session lasts longer than expected.

Usually that's actually a good thing.

Longer sessions often mean:

  • Baby needed another feeding.

  • Baby wanted extra cuddles.

  • We paused for diaper changes.

  • Baby preferred contact sleeping.

  • We created additional setups because baby was doing wonderfully.

Remember...

Those three hours are not three hours of constant photography.

There are plenty of quiet breaks built into every session.

What Does "Baby-Led" Really Mean?

You'll hear many photographers describe their work as "baby-led."

To me, that means something very specific.

Your baby decides the pace.

If your baby needs to eat...

We stop.

If your baby wants to be cuddled...

We stop.

If your baby needs to be changed...

We stop.

Beautiful newborn portraits are never more important than your baby's comfort.

Ironically, slowing down usually produces the best images.

Is a Longer Session Better?

Not necessarily.

Sometimes I finish in just over two hours because a baby sleeps peacefully throughout the session.

Other times we approach three and a half hours because a baby needs extra care.

Neither session is "better."

Every newborn is unique.

Is There a Time Limit?

Yes.

Over the years I've learned that approximately 3½ hours is usually the maximum amount of time most newborns tolerate comfortably.

Beyond that point many babies begin showing signs of overstimulation.

If I feel your baby has reached that point, we stop.

If needed, we'll simply schedule another short session to complete the gallery.

Thankfully, that rarely happens, but your baby's well-being always comes first.

How Parents Can Help Their Session Go Smoothly

There are several simple things that can help your session stay relaxed:

  • Feed your baby just before or immediately upon arrival.

  • Dress baby in loose clothing that is easy to remove.

  • Keep baby awake for a short period before leaving home if possible.

  • Bring extra bottles or feeding supplies if needed.

  • Don't worry if baby cries—it's completely normal.

I guide parents through everything else. When you book your session, you receive a client guide. Part of that guide includes how to prepare you and your newborn for your session.

Frequently Asked Questions

How old should my baby be for newborn photos?

The ideal age is 5–14 days old, when babies are generally sleepier and naturally curled into newborn poses.

What if my baby arrives early or late?

No problem. I reserve your session based on your due date and adjust it once your baby arrives.

Can parents and siblings be included?

Absolutely. Family photographs are some of the most meaningful images we create.
