Sitter Sessions, Baby Milestones & First Birthday Photography

Your baby doesn't stop changing after the newborn stage.

During the first year, babies go from tiny newborns to smiling, sitting, crawling, standing and eventually taking their first steps. Each stage looks completely different, and you don't have to wait until the first birthday to photograph it.

At Panos Productions Photography, I photograph baby milestone sessions, sitter sessions and first birthday portraits at my Los Angeles-area studio. Sessions are planned around your baby's age, personality and developmental abilities.

Whether your baby is just beginning to sit independently or getting ready to celebrate a first birthday, the goal is the same: to preserve what your baby is like right now.

When Should You Schedule Baby Milestone Photos?

There isn't one correct age for milestone photography.

Different ages capture different parts of your baby's first year.

3–5 Months: Growing Beyond the Newborn Stage

Babies at this age are becoming more alert and interactive. They may smile, make eye contact, hold their heads up during tummy time and respond enthusiastically to familiar voices.

There are fewer posing options than there will be later, but this can be an especially meaningful stage to photograph if you missed newborn portraits or simply want to document how quickly your baby has changed.

6–9 Months: The Sitter Stage

This is one of my favorite ages for baby photography.

Once babies can sit independently, we have many more possibilities for portraits. Babies at this stage are often expressive, curious and happy to interact with toys, props, sounds and the people around them.

Some babies sit independently at six months. Others aren't ready until eight or nine months. Developmental ability matters more than the number of months on the calendar.

9–11 Months: Personality Takes Over

Older babies may be crawling, clapping, waving, pulling themselves up or beginning to stand.

Sessions become more active, but this stage can produce wonderful portraits because your baby's individual personality is becoming so apparent.

First Birthday Photos

The first birthday marks the end of an extraordinary year.

First birthday sessions can include traditional milestone portraits, a custom birthday setup and, if you choose, a cake smash.

I generally recommend scheduling first birthday portraits around 10½ to 11½ months if you would like finished photographs before your baby's actual birthday.

Milestone Sessions Are About Your Baby, Not a Theme

Milestone portraits don't require an elaborate set.

In fact, some of my favorite baby portraits are simple.

Beautiful lighting, carefully chosen clothing, a few appropriate props and a baby with a newly discovered ability to sit can be more than enough.

The focus is your baby's expressions, little details and emerging personality.

Milestone sessions can include up to three outfits or looks when time and your baby's temperament allow. Changing clothing and setups gives us variety while still keeping the session manageable for a young baby.

What If My Baby Isn't Sitting Yet?

That's fine.

Babies don't develop according to a photography schedule.

If your baby isn't sitting independently, we can use tummy-time positions, lying-down portraits, supported setups and other age-appropriate options.

If your primary goal is a classic sitter session, however, it can make sense to wait until your baby can sit steadily without assistance.

Safety and your baby's actual abilities always determine what we do during the session.

What Happens During a Milestone Photo Session?

Milestone sessions are designed to move with your baby.

We may use several outfits, backgrounds or simple props to create variety. Some babies immediately start smiling and exploring. Others need time to become comfortable in a new environment.

Parents can bring favorite toys, familiar music or videos that reliably get their baby's attention. An additional adult can also be helpful for entertaining your baby and assisting during outfit changes.

There is no requirement that your baby smile through the entire session. Serious expressions, curiosity, concentration and even a little attitude are all part of your baby's personality at this age.

First Birthday & Cake Smash Photography

For families celebrating a first birthday, the session can become more elaborate.

I begin with traditional milestone portraits so we have beautiful photographs of your baby before introducing the birthday portion of the session.

Depending on the session you choose, we can incorporate a custom theme, birthday props and a cake smash.

Some babies enthusiastically attack their cake.

Some cautiously investigate the frosting.

Some want absolutely nothing to do with it.

All of those reactions are normal.

The cake isn't the purpose of the session. Your baby is.

Custom Styling Without the Stress

You don't need to arrive with an entire Pinterest board worth of props.

My studio includes backgrounds, props and baby wardrobe pieces that we can use to build your session.

For first birthday sessions, we can also discuss colors, birthday themes or other ideas you would like incorporated.

Some families prefer whimsical birthday sets. Others want simple, classic portraits.

Both can photograph beautifully.

A Baby-Led Approach

Working with babies requires flexibility.

A baby may need a few minutes with Mom. They may suddenly decide they're finished with one setup. A crawling baby may have absolutely no intention of remaining where we put them.

That's part of photographing this age.

I am a Certified Professional Photographer and a former special education teacher with extensive experience working with babies and children. Sessions are adapted to your baby's temperament and abilities rather than expecting your baby to perform for the camera.

Milestone or First Birthday: Which Session Should I Choose?

Choose a milestone session if you want to document your baby during the first year without a birthday or cake-smash theme.

This is particularly popular during the sitter stage, around 6–9 months.

Choose a first birthday session if your baby is approaching one and you want to celebrate the completion of the first year.

First birthday sessions can include classic portraits as well as birthday-themed photographs and cake smash options.

You don't have to choose one or the other during your baby's first year. Many families photograph both because a six-month sitter and a nearly one-year-old baby look remarkably different.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best age for milestone photos?

There isn't one best age. Around 6–9 months is especially popular because many babies can sit independently and have become very expressive. Earlier and later stages can also be photographed.

Does my baby have to be sitting independently?

No. Sessions can be adapted for babies who aren't sitting yet. If you specifically want classic sitter portraits, waiting until your baby can sit steadily on their own usually provides more options.

How many outfits can my baby wear?

Milestone sessions can include up to three outfits or looks when your baby's temperament and session time allow.

What should I bring?

Favorite toys, familiar music or videos can be useful for getting your baby's attention. You can also bring special clothing or sentimental items you would like incorporated.

Can we do milestone photos without a cake smash?

Absolutely. Cake smashes are only one type of first birthday photography. Milestone portraits can be completely focused on your baby without cake or a birthday theme.

When should I schedule first birthday photos?

I generally recommend photographing first birthday sessions around 10½ to 11½ months if you want the finished photographs available before your baby's birthday celebration.

Do you provide the cake?

Parents provide the cake because of food-allergy considerations. A simple six-inch cake generally photographs well without overwhelming the baby or the set.

Can parents or siblings be photographed too?

Yes. They are welcome to join in.

Your Baby's First Year Doesn't Have Just One Milestone

Newborn portraits capture where your baby's story begins. Milestone photography documents everything that starts happening next.

The smiles become bigger. The baby rolls appear. Sitting turns into crawling. Crawling becomes standing. And somewhere along the way, the tiny newborn you brought home becomes a one-year-old.

You don't have to photograph every stage.

But the stages you choose to preserve become the ones you can return to long after your baby has moved on to the next one.
