When Should I Schedule My Baby's First Birthday Photos?
Before the cake comes out, we slow down and celebrate your baby exactly as they are today. These classic milestone portraits often become the photographs parents treasure most because they capture genuine personality before the birthday fun begins.
A Los Angeles Glendale First Birthday And Cake Smash Photographer Explains Why Planning Ahead Creates Better Portraits
One of the most common questions I receive from parents is:
"When should I schedule my baby's first birthday photos?"
Many families assume they should book a session on or just before their baby's first birthday.
In reality, the best time to begin planning is two to three months before your baby's birthday.
That may sound early, but creating beautiful first birthday portraits and cake smash photography takes much more planning than most parents realize.
Whether you're celebrating with a classic cake smash session, a custom milestone portrait, or a themed birthday setup, giving your photographer enough time makes a tremendous difference in the final result.
Great Cake Smash Sessions Don't Happen Overnight
When parents see the finished photographs, they usually notice the adorable cake and their smiling baby.
What they don't see is everything that happened before they arrived.
Every custom session begins with planning.
Choosing colors.
Designing a theme.
Ordering specialty props if needed.
Building balloon garlands.
Creating custom decorations.
Testing layouts.
Some themes can be created quickly.
Others take weeks to gather all the right pieces.
If you've seen a unique idea online and hope to create something similar, giving your photographer plenty of notice allows time to make that vision a reality.
I Personally Prefer Simpler Sets
Pinterest is filled with elaborate cake smash setups.
Some are absolutely beautiful.
But over the years, I've discovered something.
When there are too many decorations, your eye doesn't know where to look.
I prefer creating timeless sets where your baby's expressions remain the star of the photograph.
Simple backgrounds.
Beautiful textures.
Soft colors.
Thoughtful props.
Rather than competing with your child, the set quietly supports the portrait.
Years from now, your baby's smile will still look timeless, even if decorating trends have changed.
Why I Recommend Photographing Before Your Baby Walks
Every baby develops at a different pace.
Some babies are confidently walking at ten months.
Others are still happily sitting at thirteen months.
There's no right or wrong timeline.
However, from a photographer's perspective, babies who are sitting confidently but not yet walking often give us the greatest variety of portraits.
They're wonderfully expressive.
Curious.
Happy to interact with toys and props.
They stay engaged with the set a little longer.
Once babies begin walking confidently, everything changes.
Suddenly the entire studio becomes interesting.
They naturally want to explore every corner of the room.
That's perfectly appropriate for their development—but it does make formal portraits more challenging.
For this reason, many families schedule first birthday photos when their baby is around 10½ to 11½ months old.
The photographs are ready before the birthday party, and babies are often at a wonderful stage for portraits.
Every Baby Has Their Own Personality
One of the things I love most about milestone photography is that every baby approaches a cake smash differently.
Some babies clap the moment they see the cake.
Some cautiously touch the frosting with one finger.
Some spend twenty minutes studying the candle.
Others completely ignore the cake and become fascinated with the balloons.
There isn't a "correct" reaction.
My job isn't to force your baby into a pose.
It's to photograph who they really are.
Why I Ask You to Bring Two Adults
This is one of the questions parents ask most often.
Whenever possible, I recommend bringing two adults to your session.
One adult becomes the entertainer.
They sing songs.
Play peek-a-boo.
Shake a favorite toy.
Celebrate every little smile.
The second adult helps with safety.
As babies become mobile, they move quickly.
Having someone close by to gently spot your child allows me to concentrate on creating beautiful photographs while everyone feels relaxed.
It also makes outfit changes much faster and smoother.
Most parents are surprised by how active a first birthday and cake smash session really is.
There's a lot of crawling.
Standing.
Laughing.
Changing outfits.
Cleaning little hands.
Rearranging props.
The extra pair of hands makes the entire experience much easier.
Think Beyond the Cake
One of my favorite parts of every session actually happens before the cake appears.
I always begin with classic milestone portraits.
These timeless photographs capture your baby's personality without frosting on their face or colorful icing on their outfit.
Only after we've created those portraits do we bring out the birthday cake.
Many parents tell me these become the images they display on their walls because they beautifully capture this exciting stage of childhood.
When Should You Book?
If you're hoping for custom first birthday photos in the San Fernando Valley, I recommend:
2–3 months before the birthday: Contact your photographer and begin planning your theme.
4–6 weeks before the birthday: Finalize wardrobe, colors, and decorations.
Around 11 months old: Photograph the session so your gallery is ready before the birthday celebration.
Planning ahead gives you the greatest flexibility, especially during busy seasons.
Celebrate the First Year
Your baby's first year passes remarkably quickly.
One moment you're scheduling newborn photographs.
Before you know it, you're planning a first birthday celebration.
Professional cake smash photography isn't simply about a birthday cake.
It's about celebrating twelve months of growth, personality, and unforgettable milestones.
Families visit my studio from Glendale, Pasadena, Burbank, La Cañada Flintridge, Montrose, Tujunga, Studio City, Sherman Oaks, North Hollywood, and throughout Los Angeles for personalized first birthday photos designed around their baby's unique personality.
Every session is carefully planned because your baby's first birthday deserves more than a last-minute backdrop.
It deserves a portrait experience created just for your family.
