First Birthday Photography in Los Angeles

Cake Smash & Milestone Portrait Sessions

Your baby's first year goes by faster than most parents ever imagine. One year doesn't seem very long until you're the parent of a one-year-old.

One moment you're bringing home your newborn. Before you know it, your baby is sitting independently, laughing, clapping, crawling, and taking those first wobbly steps. A professional first birthday photography session captures this exciting stage before your baby officially becomes a toddler.

At Panos Productions Photography, I create custom first birthday portraits, cake smash photography, and milestone sessions for families throughout Glendale, Pasadena, Burbank, La Cañada Flintridge, Montrose, Tujunga, Studio City, Sherman Oaks, North Hollywood, and the greater Los Angeles area.

Every session is designed around one goal: capturing your baby's unique personality while creating heirloom artwork your family will treasure for generations.

First Birthday Photos Are About More Than Cake

Many parents think a cake smash session is simply about frosting.

It isn't.

Your baby's first birthday is one of the biggest milestones of childhood. Their personality is blossoming. They're interacting with the world in new ways, making eye contact, clapping, laughing, and showing curiosity about everything around them.

Those moments deserve to be remembered.

That's why every session begins with beautiful milestone portraits before the cake ever appears.

Why I Photograph First Birthday Sessions This Way

One of the biggest differences about my sessions is that I don't start with the cake.

Instead, I begin with classic milestone portraits.

Your baby is happy.

Clean.

Curious.

Relaxed.

This gives us beautiful portraits that focus entirely on your child—not frosting.

Only after we've created those timeless portraits do we bring out the birthday cake.

Many parents later tell me these classic portraits become the photographs they display throughout their home because they capture their baby's personality so beautifully.

Why the Best Age Is Around 11 Months

Parents often ask when they should schedule first birthday photos in Glendale, Burbank, or Los Angeles.

I usually recommend photographing your session when your baby is around 10½ to 11½ months old.

There are several reasons.

The photographs are finished before the birthday party.

The images can be used for invitations and decorations.

Many babies are sitting confidently while still enjoying interacting with the set.

Every baby develops differently, of course. Some babies are walking early, while others are just beginning to crawl. We'll discuss your baby's stage of development and plan the session accordingly.

Every Cake Smash Is Custom Designed

No two babies are alike.

Your session shouldn't be either.

We'll begin by discussing your ideas, favorite colors, birthday party theme, or nursery style.

Some families love whimsical themes.

Others prefer clean, timeless portraits with soft neutral colors.

Some of my favorite themes include:

  • Woodland Adventure

  • Wild One

  • Little Baker

  • Vintage Airplanes

  • Teddy Bear Picnic

  • Lemon or Strawberry Picnic

  • Floral Garden

  • Storybook Themes

  • Boho Neutrals

  • Classic Balloon Celebrations

I also love minimalist designs that keep the focus exactly where it belongs—on your baby.

Simple Sets Create Timeless Portraits

Pinterest is full of elaborate birthday setups.

While they can certainly be fun, I've found that simpler sets often create the most meaningful photographs.

Soft textures.

Beautiful lighting.

Carefully chosen props.

Thoughtful colors.

When the background isn't competing for attention, your baby's expressions become the star of every image.

These portraits look just as beautiful twenty years from now as they do today.

What Happens During a Cake Smash Session?

Every session follows a relaxed, baby-led flow.

Milestone Portraits

We begin with classic portraits in one or more outfits.

Themed Portraits

Next, we introduce props and decorations that match your custom theme.

Cake Smash

Then comes the fun!

Some babies dive right into the frosting.

Others carefully investigate it with one finger.

Some would rather play with the balloons than touch the cake.

Every reaction is wonderful because it's authentic.

Bubble Bath

Many families choose to finish with a warm splash bath that creates adorable cleanup photographs and gives your baby a chance to play before heading home.

What If My Baby Doesn't Like Cake?

Believe it or not, this happens more often than you might think.

Some babies love cake.

Some babies barely touch it.

Others are fascinated by the candle, balloons, or wooden spoon instead.

That's perfectly normal.

The goal isn't forcing your baby to eat cake.

The goal is capturing your baby's genuine personality.

Some of my favorite sessions have been with babies who never actually smashed the cake at all.

Why I Ask You to Bring Two Adults

Cake smash sessions are surprisingly active.

Your baby may crawl.

Stand.

Move quickly between props.

Change outfits several times.

Having two adults makes the experience smoother for everyone.

One adult can entertain your baby with songs, peek-a-boo, or favorite toys while the other stays close for safety and helps with quick outfit changes.

This allows me to concentrate on creating beautiful photographs while everyone stays relaxed.

Let's Plan Your Baby's First Birthday Session

FAQs

When should I book first birthday photos?

I recommend booking approximately two to three months before your baby's birthday. Custom themes, specialty props, and balloon installations often require advance planning.

What is the best age for a cake smash session?

Most babies are photographed between 10½ and 11½ months, allowing time to edit images before the birthday celebration.

Do you provide decorations?

Yes. Every session is custom designed, and most props, styling, and backdrops are provided.

What if my baby is already walking?

That's perfectly fine. We'll adapt the session to your baby's developmental stage. Walking babies simply require a slightly different approach.

What if my baby has food allergies?

We can discuss alternatives that are appropriate for your child, including allergy-friendly cakes or non-cake celebration options.

Can siblings or parents be included?

Yes. Family or sibling portraits can be added to your session so you have photographs celebrating your baby's first birthday together.

What if my baby cries during the cake smash?

It happens a lot, actually. Some photos of your baby crying can be cute. But if they are uncomfortable for more than a minute or so, we take a break to comfort them and regroup.

How long does a first birthday session take?

About an hour. Most babies have had enough after that.

Do you provide the cake, or do parents bring it?

For food allergy reasons, parents provide the cake. I usually recommend a small 6 inch in diameter cake. Bigger cakes overwhelm the image.

Celebrate Your Baby's First Year

The first birthday isn't just a celebration of turning one. It's a celebration of everything your family has experienced during an unforgettable year.

I'd be honored to help you preserve those memories with custom first birthday photography and cake smash portraits that reflect your baby's unique personality and your family's story.
