What Happens During a Newborn Photography Session?

Sleeping newborn baby girl wrapped in a blush pink swaddle and wearing a floral headband on a soft gray fur blanket during a professional studio newborn photography session in Los Angeles.

Every newborn is beautifully unique, and simple portraits often become family favorites. Wrapped in a soft blush swaddle with a delicate floral headband, this sweet baby girl slept peacefully throughout her session. Timeless setups like this keep the focus where it belongs—on your baby's tiny features, peaceful expressions, and the incredible joy of welcoming a new life into your family.

Booking your newborn session is exciting—but if you've never done one before, you may wonder what actually happens once you arrive.

Will your baby sleep?
What if they cry?
How long does it take?
Will you feel rushed?

These are some of the most common questions parents ask before their session.

The good news is that newborn photography is intentionally slow, calm, and completely baby-led. Every part of the experience is designed around your baby's comfort and safety.

Here's exactly what you can expect.

Before You Arrive

Your experience actually begins several days before your appointment. When you book your session, you will receive my Newborn Studio Guide. It will provide a lot of information about how to prepare for your newborn session in Los Angeles.

You'll receive preparation information explaining how to help encourage a sleepy baby, what to bring, and what to wear if parents or siblings will be photographed.

If your baby decides to have a different plan—and many do—that's perfectly normal. Every newborn is unique, and sessions are flexible enough to adapt.

Arriving at the Studio

When you arrive, there's no rush.

The studio is already warm and prepared specifically for newborns. Wraps, blankets, outfits, headbands, bonnets, and carefully selected props are ready before your session begins.

Many parents are surprised to learn they don't need to bring much at all. In most cases, just bring your baby, diapers, bottles if bottle feeding, and anything special you'd like included.

Once you settle in, we'll discuss any colors, poses, or setups you'd especially like while making sure your baby stays comfortable throughout the session.

Getting Baby Comfortable

Rather than jumping straight into photographs, we begin by making sure your baby is relaxed.

We time your newborn session that that the first thing you did when you arrive is feed the baby. That may take 20 minutes or it may take 40, but that’s what we do first.

Professional newborn photography follows your baby's pace—not the clock.

Many babies fall asleep quickly. Others need extra cuddles before they settle. Both are completely normal.

The Photography Begins

Once your baby is sleepy and comfortable, we'll gently move through a variety of poses.

Most sessions include:

  • Wrapped portraits

  • Beanbag poses

  • Prop setups

  • Detail photographs of tiny fingers, toes, eyelashes, and lips

  • Close-up portraits

  • Different angles and compositions

Every pose is done slowly and safely. If your baby isn't comfortable in a pose, we simply move on to another.

No pose is ever worth making a baby unhappy.

Plenty of Feeding and Cuddle Breaks

One thing surprises almost every new parent:

We stop often.

Babies need to eat.

Babies need cuddles.

Babies need diaper changes.

Sometimes they simply want to be held.

These breaks aren't interruptions—they're part of a successful newborn session.

In fact, many beautiful images happen immediately after a baby has been comforted.

Family and Sibling Photos

If you've chosen a family newborn session, we'll usually photograph parents and siblings during part of the appointment.

We'll guide you through every pose.

You don't need to know how to stand or where to look.

Even toddlers who have short attention spans can usually be photographed successfully because family portraits are planned around their attention span whenever possible.

Safety Comes First

Nothing is more important than your baby's safety.

Professional newborn photographers spend years learning how to safely support newborns, recognize when a baby is uncomfortable, sanitize equipment, and safely pose infants.

Some popular poses seen online are actually created using composite editing, meaning two or more photographs are combined later so an adult is always supporting the baby.

Your baby's comfort always comes before getting a particular photograph.

How Long Does a Newborn Session Take?

Most professional newborn sessions last between two and four hours.

That may sound long, but much of that time is spent:

  • Feeding

  • Burping

  • Changing diapers

  • Swaddling

  • Rocking baby to sleep

  • Waiting patiently

The actual photography usually takes much less time than parents expect. The most time consuming things are getting baby comfortable and then posed. The actual photos take seconds. Even though your session may take 3 hours. Probably only 20 of all that time is me taking photos. Read more at How Long Do Newborn Photography Sessions Take in Glendale?

After the Session

Once your session is finished, the editing process begins.

Each selected image is individually hand-edited to create beautiful, timeless portraits while preserving your baby's natural appearance.

After editing, you'll receive your gallery and choose your favorite images based on the collection you've selected.

Many families also decide to create heirloom albums or wall artwork so their baby's first portraits can be enjoyed for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my baby cries during the session?

Crying is completely normal. We simply pause for feeding, cuddling, or soothing before continuing.

What if my baby won't sleep?

Many beautiful newborn portraits can still be created with awake babies. Patience is often all that's needed.

Can siblings be included?

Absolutely. Family and sibling portraits are one of the most meaningful parts of many newborn sessions.

Should I bring outfits?

Most studios—including mine—provide wraps, blankets, outfits, hats, bonnets, and accessories. You're welcome to bring sentimental items you'd like included.

What if we arrive late?

Let your photographer know as soon as possible. Sessions usually have some flexibility, but arriving on time allows plenty of time for feeding and soothing without feeling rushed.

A newborn photography session isn't just about taking pictures. It's about creating a calm, safe experience where your baby's first days are documented with patience, care, and attention to every tiny detail.

Whether your baby sleeps through the entire session or spends part of it wide awake, beautiful portraits are created by working with your baby—not against them.
